Violet worked very hard for most of her life as she was more or less a single parent and was also supporting her mother. After she remarried life became a little easier but they remained a very close-knit family, even after David moved away with his work. Although they only actually lived together for a very short time, Violet and Alexander actually remained married for 19 years, eventually divorcing in 1962 due to his wish to remarry. Violet had known George for some time before they married and apparently they were very happy together and made up for all those earlier years of hardship.
